Havelock: Getting Here And Getting Around

Getting here

Flight

The Veer Sarvarkar airport in Port Blair is currently the only one in the Andamans and is connected to most major cities in India. Although most flights you might find are long connecting flights that stop at either Chennai or Kolkata, there are a few flights from Mumbai, Bangalore and Delhi that are direct and usually the ones we personally try to book. Also we recommend you book flights that arrive in the morning so that you can catch a ferry to Havelock the same day if you’re not interested in spending the night at Port Blair.

Ship

There are ships that leave for Port Blair from Chennai, Vizag and Kolkata about 2-3 times a month. The tickets cannot be booked online and the fare for cabin accommodation would cost you about the same as a flight ticket. The journey takes 3-4 days and ship schedules are a bit unreliable. It is not a viable option for someone who is looking to travel comfortably or is short on time, but could be cool if one would like to try it for the sake of adventure, as some ships go around the Nicobars to get to Port Blair.

Ferry

Once you’ve reached Port Blair, there are multiple ferry operators that connect you to all the important Andaman Islands. There are ferries to Havelock and Neil from Port Bair as well as between the two islands. The government ferry is the cheapest at about Rs 500 to Havelock but it is extremely difficult to get a ticket. Reliable private operators are Makruzz and Green Ocean that cost between Rs 900-1300 to Havelock with the advantage of online or pre-booking.

Getting around Havelock

Cabs

There are cabs you can hire to get around on the island, normally through the resort you are staying at. This is a relatively expensive option but well suited to families and large groups of people.

Public transport

There are regular local buses that run from the Jetty to Radhanagar beach and Kalapathar village every hour. The last bus back is usually around 6pm in the evening, it is best to always check with the driver.

Rent a scooter/cycle

This is the most popular option for travelers and backpackers. You can rent a cycle for Rs 100-150 per day or rent a scooter for Rs 500 per day and explore the Island at your own time.
